Why do we continue to bet on the wild?

In Yucatán, the sea is not only part of the landscape: it is sustenance, culture, and tradition. For generations, coastal communities have lived off fishing, a trade that not only feeds thousands of families but also defines the state's identity. However, today more than ever, it is essential to look to the future and ensure that this natural wealth can continue to thrive—without being depleted.

What does sustainable fishing mean?

Sustainable fishing is that which allows us to take advantage of marine resources without jeopardizing their renewal. It involves respecting the reproductive cycles of species, avoiding overfishing, using selective fishing gear, and reducing the environmental impact on marine ecosystems.

In recent years, Yucatán has taken important steps to promote more responsible fishing practices. Some fishing cooperatives have adopted voluntary closures, traceability systems have been implemented for products such as octopus, and certifications that guarantee the product's origin and ethical handling are being promoted. Furthermore, many of the region's iconic species—such as grouper, Mayan octopus, and lobster—are subject to strictly regulated fishing seasons to allow for their recovery and ensure their continued existence.

As a distributor, we have a great responsibility: to choose suppliers who work with respect for the sea, promote good practices, and offer products that are not only high quality but also responsibly sourced. Committing to sustainable fishing is not only an ethical decision, but also a way to ensure that the flavors of the sea remain on our tables for generations to come.
